Chelsea Continues to be Inconsistent

Chelsea vs Sheffield United Recap

After scoring two stoppage time goals midweek against Manchester United, Chelsea seeked to keep there luck and winning streak up. Sunday, Chelsea kicked off against last place Sheffield United, which looked like a seemingly easy win. Coming into this match Chelsea had won two of its last five, Sheffield had only tied two of its last five.

In the first half of the match, after just 11 minutes Chelsea opens scoring with Thiago Silva score a low driven stick back post off of a corner kick. But that didn’t deter Sheffield United, just 20 minutes later Jayden Bogle equalized with a near post strike pass Petrovic. At that point Sheffield looked in control of the match, pressing and counter-pressing, and counter attacking Chelsea. Sheffield United finished the match with 11 shots with 6 on target to Chelsea’s 6 shots with 3 on target.

Into the second half, Sheffield continued to dominate Chelsea but into the 66th minute Chelsea found a stroke of luck when Noni Madueke cut inside and shot near post to bring Chelsea back into the lead with less than half an hour left. What looked like 3 point secured for Chelsea, a free kick in stoppage time find Oliver McBurnie equalizing gaining a point for Sheffield United.

Some things I noticed about the match is that:

  • officiating was questionable and seemed a bit onesided

  • Noni Madueke needs more time

  • Sheffield United looked like the had a game plan and executed it to perfection

    • Pressing and not allowing Chelsea to control the match

  • Conor Gallagher looked unnoticeable and lost on the field

  • Nicolas Jackson still isn’t ready to lead this team, he looked inconsistent and lost today, decision making wasn’t good either

  • Though Cole Palmer has been outstanding for Chelsea there is still more growing for him.

My overall conclusion and synopsis of this match is that there was an obvious disadvantage tactically for Chelsea. Mauricio Pochettino seemed completely out coached throughout the match and players looked confused and out of place. I think we’ll see the end of his tenured as Chelsea’s boss come June, after barely getting three points against Manchester United, drawing against Sheffield United and being in 10 place in the Premier League. There was a stat on Twitter that said Chelsea have dropped 2 points vs Sheffield United, 2 points vs Burnley, 6 points vs Wolves, 5 points vs Brentford, 3 points vs Everton, 3 points vs Forest, and 2 points vs Bournemouth. If you let that sink in Chelsea and Pochettino are mid table merchants and the results are there to show it.

In conclusion, I love this club and feel like we have a foundation for an incredible squad but is Mauricio Pochettino that manager that will get us to the promise land. That’s the question ownership and our fan base need to figure out.
